SHOE
POLISH BRUSH

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION AND OBSERVATION:
The problems observed in the process of polishing shoe are:
-
number of seperate materials required to make them shine (hard brush, soft brush, shining cloth
-
inconvinient to carry and travel.
-
due to brush uncovered bristles the surroundings get dirty with the polish.
Creating a funtionality, reducing the units required to polish a shoe by the category of people lying in the highest percentage of the economy as to benefit their convinience , compactibility and portibility
DESIGN BRIEF:

OPTIONS AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET:

IDEATION:
The felt used in a duster has the fibres equivalent to the strength of the softness required by in the polishing cloth. This material can eliminate the need of soft brush and the cloth making the process of shoe polish hassle free.

PROCESS:

02. Elimination of extra wood
03. Holes drilled for the bristles
01. Handle base cutting
05. Attaching bristles to the holes drilled
06. Knobs attached on both the sides
05. Knobs made to hook elastic bands on the sides
07. Failed attempt with the hooks and the rubber

Hand position with the brush when in use
Position when not in use
Brush position when in use
-
The initial idea was to attach the two brushes when in use and even when at rest with enough elasticity to fit in a human hand for grip in between the brushes as the brushes would twist 360 degree when in use or otherwise accordingly.
-
Assuming the elastic rubber material used in tyres would be suitable for this as it has the right number of elasticity required.
-
But when practically applied it turned out to be unstable and couldnt balance the positions when at rest and when in use as both the brushes has unequal height to be managed by the elasticity of the rubber material used.
-
Even the hooks attached didnt have the strength to hold the elastic pull and pressure.

Hand grip grooves
Leather cover
Felt material
Brush bristles
-
the knobs were removed and velcro was added on the sides of the leather strips which would join the brushes when not in use and seperate when in use.
08. Alternative final attempt
09. Final Product :

-
The aim behind this design was to cater the consumers falling the lower middle class to higher middle class category for their convinience, portibility and compactibility
-
Amalgamation of charecteristics of two materials is the USP
-
UCD features:
-
For the grip of the duster there is a hollow space for the palm to rest and hold the brush against the palm.
-
Brush dimensions were set according to the human anthropometric measures
